ABSTRACT

In recent years, due to the impact of COVID-19, the market prospect of non-contact handling has improved and the development potential is huge. This paper designs an intelligent truck based on Azure Kinect, which can save manpower and improve efficiency, and greatly reduce the infection risk of medical staff and community workers. The target object is visually recognized by Azure Kinect to obtain the center of mass of the target, and the GPS and Kalman filter are used to achieve accurate positioning. The 4-DOF robot arm is selected to grasp and transport the target object, so as to complete the non-contact handling work. In this paper, different shapes of objects are tested. The experiment shows that the system can accurately complete the positioning function, and the accuracy rate is 95.56%. The target object recognition is combined with the depth information to determine the distance, and the spatial coordinates of the object centroid are obtained in real time. The accuracy rate can reach 94.48%, and the target objects of different shapes can be recognized. When the target object is grasped by the robot arm, it can be grasped accurately according to the depth information, and the grasping rate reaches 92.67%. © 2023, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

ABSTRACT

During the pandemic, virtual Transnational higher education (TNHE) became one of the solutions to support researchers and students in continuing academic research collaborations, intercultural competence, and global awareness acquisition via a virtual platform. This case study explores the implementation of the MOST-NSF Partnership for International Research and Education (PIRE) research project between Taiwan and the USA in terms of governance modes and research productivity according to Knight's Functional, Organizational, a Political approaches (FOPA) model. The study finds that the political and functional models are somehow consistent with the national needs of scientific development. Second, the COVID-19 crisis intensified international collaboration and justified the supremacy of global sciences, which has overridden national and individual interests. The case study provides feasible management modes and research collaboration experiences for the researchers who would like to implement transnational higher education with other foreign partners in the post-pandemic era. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

This research investigates the influence of bank loans on Chinese listed companies' performance by collecting data on bank loan amounts and indicators used to measure performance, such as return on assets (ROA) and Tobin's Q, semiannually from 2015 to 2020. Pooling panel regression models are employed to determine the relationship between firms' performance and their amount of bank loans. This study contributes to the literature by controlling for additional bank loan characteristics and comparing the relevance between bank loans and bond issuance. The authors also find that the relationship between firm performance and bank loans shows a nonlinear concave relationship, suggesting the negative impact is more severe in the high loan-to-asset region. The subsample after 2018 shows a significantly positive relationship, indicating that the impact of COVID-19 might alter the prevalent relationship. In addition, short-term debt has a more noticeable negative impact on firm performance than long-term debt. Both results become weaker after COVID-19. This chapter can help listed companies to trade off using long-term or short-term bank loans as their debt financing methods and approach a better capital structure. © 2023 by Emerald Publishing Limited.

ABSTRACT

In order to improve risk prevention and control capabilities for international sports events under the background of COVID-19, case data of 23 international sports since the pandemic outbreak were collected, and an evolutionary network model with COVID-19 as risk source was established. Then, risk analysis on the model was carried out based on in-and-out degree, number of sub-net nodes, the shortest path and average path of complex network theory, key risk event nodes were identified, and preventive measures were put forward. Finally, critical chains were obtained by analyzing causal mechanism and types of risk chains, and countermeasures and suggestions for chain disconnection and disaster mitigation were put forward. The results show that severe epidemic situation and rising risk of virus transmission in host cities are the key nodes in evolutionary network, and cycle chain of political relations and public opinion is the most destructive one. Therefore, it is necessary to promote the development of a public opinion monitoring system and strengthen positive publicity of sports events. © 2020 China Safety Science Journal. ABSTRACT

The quality of teaching and learning in educational programmes at higher education institutions (HEIs) cannot be overemphasised. This is of particular importance in skills programmes, such as acupuncture, because the teaching and learning of acupuncture at HEIs significantly influence students' competence in the world of work. Acupuncture is one of the most popular alternative treatments globally and contributes to improving public health. To provide quality acupuncture services to the public, HEIs must ensure that their students are competent in implementing the knowledge and skills gained in the programmes. The focus of this study is to explore students' experiences with the teaching and learning of the acupuncture programme at a South African HEI. A conceptual framework adapted from Shulman's (1986) Pedagogical Content Knowledge model and Mishra and Koehler's (2006) Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge model was utilised as a theoretical lens in this study. A descriptive qualitative single case study design was employed. The authors adopted a purposive sampling technique to recruit ten participants from the identified HEI. The findings of this study revealed that students' ambivalent experiences in the acupuncture programme. The findings will contribute to the improvement of quality teaching and learning of an acupuncture programme. This study concluded that diverse teaching and learning strategies should be implemented in the acupuncture programme, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. ©Authors.

ABSTRACT

Because of the frequent occurrence of chronic diseases, the COVID-19 pandemic, etc., online health expert question-answering (HQA) services have been unable to cope with the rapidly increasing demand for online consultations. Building a virtual health assistant based on medical named entity recognition (NER) can effectively assist with the consultation process, but the unstandardized expressions within HQA text pose a serious challenge for medical NER tasks. The main goal of this study is to propose a novel deep medical NER approach based on a collaborative decision strategy (CDS), i.e., co_decision_NER (CDN), that can identify standard and nonstandard medical entities in the HQA context. We collected 10,000 question–answer pairs from HaoDF, extracted medical entities from 15 entity categories, and used a CDS to fuse the advantages of different NER models. Ultimately, CDN achieved a performance (precision = 84.50%, recall = 84.30%, F1 = 84.40%) that was significantly better than that of the state-of-the-art (SOTA) method. Our empirical analysis suggests that the entity types Disease (DIS), Sign (SIG), Test (TES), Drug (DRU), Surgery (SUR), Precaution (PRE), and Region (REG) can be most easily expressed arbitrarily in the doctor–patient interaction scenario of HQA services. In addition, CDN can identify not only standard but also nonstandard medical entities, effectively alleviating the severe out-of-vocabulary (OOV) problem faced by HQA services when performing medical NER tasks. The core contribution of this study is the development of a novel neural network model fusion algorithm that can improve the performance of entity recognition in medical domain-specific tasks. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

ABSTRACT

The corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues to severely impact healthcare systems around the world, and patients with cancer are even worse affected owing to compromised immune status and greater exposure risk. In the present review, we retrieved the relevant literature including guidelines and consensuses directly related to the purpose of this study from the PubMed database, and then summarized the research data on cancer and COVID-19, aiming to discuss the personal protection, systemic anti-cancer therapy, outcome of co-infection, and the clinical management strategy in this population. We found that patients with malignant tumors had a higher chance of suffering COVID-19, co-infection of whom had an even worse clinical prognosis, especially for those with lung cancer or hematologic cancers. Systemic chemotherapy may delay the clearance of severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus of human body, and thus have a negative impact on the clinical outcomes of COVID-19, while certain endocrine therapy and targeted drugs having limited or no impact. There has been no sufficient evidence for the impact of immune checkpoint therapy on the outcomes of COVID-19 till now. It is of great value to strengthen the personal protection of patients, adjust the anti-tumor treatments rationally and optimize the clinical management processes.Copyright © 2022, Editorial Office of China Oncology. ABSTRACT

Purpose: This paper aims to use a quantitative approach to explore the role of online learning behavior in students' academic performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, the authors probe its mediating effect in the relationship between student motivation (extrinsic and intrinsic) and academic performance in a blended learning context. Design/methodology/approach: Survey data were collected from 148 students taking an organizational behavior course at one Chinese university. The data were paired and analyzed through regression analysis. Findings: The results show that students should actively engage in online learning behavior to maximize the effects of blended learning. Extrinsic motivation was found to positively influence academic performance both directly and indirectly through online learning behavior, while intrinsic motivation affected academic performance only indirectly. Originality/value: Through paired data on extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, online learning behavior and academic performance, this study provides a more nuanced understanding of how online learning behavior affects the focal relationship, and it advances research on the mechanisms underlying the focal relationship. Practitioners should enhance students' online learning behavior to boost blended learning effects during the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.

ABSTRACT

In the past 12 years, geo-setting research has made great progress and become one of the key points in the current domestic geopolitical research, gathering many domestic geopolitical research groups and promoting the revival of China's geopolitical studies. On the basis of summarizing and analyzing the latest developments and trends of geopolitics and geo-setting research in China and abroad, this paper focuses on the idea, agenda and approaches of geo-setting research. Centered on the interactive practices of multiple geo-actors, its idea regards the geo-setting as the "information" or decision-making dataset for their interactive practices, which also results from their interactions. Thus, geo-actors' decisions for actions can be made under complete information, incomplete information, or even when true or false information cannot be distinguished. Under this new thought, the geo-setting research agenda generally includes three items: (1) the analysis of geo-setting elements (including fundamental, relational and structural elements);(2) the spatio-temporal process and mechanism of geo-setting;(3) the design of geo-setting technical system. In order to integrate different fields, various scales and multiple actors, this paper takes the conflict in northern Myanmar as an example to present three approaches of geo-setting research, namely, cross-field interaction, cross-scale coupling and multiple geo-actors' game playing. Under current complex situation of once-in-a-century changes and COVID-19 pandemic, clarifying the idea, agenda and approaches of geo-setting studies is of great theoretical value and practical significance for accurately and scientifically analyzing the current complex situation and proposing China's response strategies. © 2023, Science Press. ABSTRACT

Considering the influences of the COVID-19 disease, systemic risks with respect to the tourism industry and the erratic preferences of the tourists have fiercely affected the performance of machine learning models for tourist trajectory prediction. This paper introduces a noise-reduced and Bayesian optimized light gradient boosting machine(LightGBM) to forecast the likelihood of visitors entering the consequent scenic attraction, accommodating to the variability of tourism attributes. The empirical evidence of tourism data in Luoyang City Hall from March 2020 to November 2021 illustrates that our practice surpasses the baseline LightGBM mechanism as well as a random search-based technique regarding prediction loss by 5.39% and 4.42% correspondingly. The proposed research demonstrates a promising stride in the improvement of intelligent tourism in the experimental area by enhancing tourist experiences and allocating tourism resources efficiently, which can also be smoothly applied to other scenic spots. © 2023 SPIE.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 is caused by severe acute respiratory SARS-CoV-2. Regardless of the availability of treatment strategies for COVID-19, effective therapy will remain essential. A promising approach to tackle the SARS-CoV-2 could be small interfering (si) RNAs. Here we designed the small hairpin RNA (named as shRNA688) for targeting the prepared 813 bp Est of the S protein genes (Delta). The conserved and mutated regions of the S protein genes from the genomes of the SARS-CoV-2 variants in the public database were analyzed. A 813 bp fragment encoding the most part of the RBD and partial downstream RBD of the S protein was cloned into the upstream red florescent protein gene (RFP) as a fusing gene in the pCMV-S-Protein RBD-Est-RFP plasmid for expressing a potential target for RNAi. The double stranded of the DNA encoding for shRNA688 was constructed in the downstream human H1 promoter of the plasmid in which CMV promoter drives enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) marker gene expression. These two kinds of the constructed plasmids were co-transfected into HEK293T via Lipofectamine 2000. The degradation of the transcripts of the SARS-CoV-2 S protein fusing gene expressed in the transfected HEK293T treated by RNAi was analyzed by RT-qPCR with a specific probe of the targeted SARS-CoV-2 S protein gene transcripts. Our results showed that shRNA688 targeting the conserved region of the S protein genes could effectively reduce the transcripts of the S protein genes. This study provides a cell model and technical support for the research and development of the broad-spectrum small nucleic acid RNAi drugs against SARS-CoV-2 or the RNAi drugs for the other hazard viruses which cause human diseases. ABSTRACT

Non-contact human-machine interaction is the future trend for wearable technologies. This demand is recently highlighted by the pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Herein, an anti-fatigue and highly conductive hydrogel thermocell with photo-thermal conversion ability for non-contact self-powering applications is designed. Double hydrogen-bonding enhanced supramolecular hydrogel is obtained with N-acryloyl glycinamide (NAGA) and diacrylate capped Pluronic F68 (F68-DA) via one-step photo-initiated polymerization. The supramolecular hydrogel can accommodate saturated electrolytes to fulfill the triple function of ionic crosslinking, heat-to-electricity conversion, and light response of thermocell. Eminently, the thermocell stands out by virtue of its high seebeck coefficient (-2.17 mV K−1) and extraordinary toughness (Fatigue threshold ≈ 3120 J m−2). The self-powering ability under the control of light heating is explored, and a model of a non-contact "light-remoted” sensor with self-powered and sensing integrated performance remote-controlled by light is constructed. It is believed that this study will pave the way for the non-contact energy supply of wearable devices. © 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.

ABSTRACT

The study of information spreading is important and necessary, especially during the Coronavirus, when plenty of opinions aroused in the Chinese Sina-microblog. On the basis of previous studies, we propose a comprehensive susceptible-reading-forwarding-immune (SRFI) model with considering user active search. We establish differential equations introducing average active reading rate to describe the multi-information propagation process. By using typical event about COVID-19 during the outbreak of public opinion to carry out the numerical fitting experiment to estimate model parameters, fit real data, and analyze the calculated information transmission indexes, we verify the validity of the model. We analyze the sensitivity of multiple parameters to multi-information transmission index based on reading and forwarding and the effect of average active reading rate to show the influence of the new parameter on multi-information transmission. In addition, to compare the predictive ability of the previous model with our new model, we use the early prediction method. Result shows that our new model can forecast the process of multi-information transmission faster and more exactly. The conclusions above indicate that the role of user active search is not negligible and the I-SRFI model can help us design effective communication strategies for rapid implementation of public health interventions. © 2022 IEEE.
